Local specialities

Oudenaarde is a true beer town!

Its brewing tradition goes back centuries. Several breweries continue to keep this rich tradition alive today, including Roman, Liefmans, Cnudde and Smisje. The region is particularly known for its characteristic brown beers, as well as its delicious cherry beers (kriek).

The Oudenaarde grain distillery Braeckman offers a wide selection of young and aged jenever (a traditional Belgian spirit), fruit-flavoured jenevers, cream jenevers, fine liqueurs, special aperitifs and much more. There is something for everyone!

But Oudenaarde has much more to offer than a delicious local beer or a glass of jenever. The region is also home to a variety of tasty treats and traditional specialities that are well worth discovering.

One example is “Lekkies”, the best-known sweets made by Jan van Gent, an artisanal confectionery in Kerselare.

Oudenaarde not only has a beer bearing the name of Adriaen Brouwer, but also an Adriaen Brouwer cake and Adriaen Brouwer cheese, both of which are well worth tasting.

And for something delicious on your sandwich, try a slice of Ename Abbey ham – a high-quality ham that is lightly salted and slowly cured to develop its distinctive flavour.

So make sure you leave some room for a taste of Oudenaarde!
